Parent conferences will be held Tuesday, March 11th through Friday, March 14th. We will be on minimum day schedule these four days, and all grades will be dismissed at 10:55am. Please be sure to make arrangements for your students to be picked up at 10:55am each day, and be on the lookout for communication from your child's teacher if a conference is to be scheduled. |

Our final ELAC meeting of the school year will be on Tuesday, April 22 at 12:45pm. We will be discussing the upcoming CAASPP assessment for 3rd to 5th graders. Additionally, the FACE department will present resources available for families, and we will have a librarian from the public library share valuable information and resources. |

We have begun the Summative ELPAC Assessment for our English Learner students. ELPAC is the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California. ELPAC is used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.
You are an important part of your child’s education. Some things you can do to help your child are:
Read to your child, or have your child read to you on a regular basis. Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see in the picture or what is happening in the picture. Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school. Make sure your child has plenty of rest and that they have a complete breakfast before starting their school day. Talk to your child’s teacher about ways you can help support your child’s progress.

Each spring, students participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The assessments are computer-based tests that measure what your child knows and is able to do. CAASPP testing at Whitney will start on Wedneday, April 23rd and run through Friday, May 16th.
Depending on your child’s grade, they will take the following tests: ● Students in Grades 3 – 8 and 11 will take English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics tests. ● Students in Grades 5, 8 and 12 will take a science test.

How can I help my child get ready for the CAASPP? You are an important part of your child’s education. Some things you can do to help your child are: - Talk about the test. Make sure your child is not scared or anxious.
- Tell your child that you and their teacher(s) have high expectations and are there to help.
- Take a practice test with your child.
- Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before testing.
- Ensure your child arrives to school on time.

Whitney Ave Elementary is working on forming a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to support our students and teachers! PTAs are a great way to build community, share information, support learning, raise funds, and create a culture of support.

Parents and staff:
I am Nicholas Baltasar, an eighth grader from Winston Churchill Middle School. As many people know, the intersection at Mission Ave and Whitney Ave is a public safety concern. Over the past four years, 17 accidents have happened at the intersection (Source: CHP). Pedestrians have even been severely injured at the intersection. All pedestrian incidents in the four year timeframe at the intersection have involved minors, most likely schoolchildren.
As my service project, I have taken the initiative to change this safety issue. Along with gathering relevant data, I am petitioning the County of Sacramento to implement safer traffic regulations at the intersection (probably signal lights or improved crosswalks). I need each and every one of your help to ensure that we gather the most signatures to change this issue for the better. The link to sign the digital petition is below. Thank you for your support.

Families, we ask for your collaboration in keeping our parking lots safe. Please: - School starts at 7:45am. Breakfast begins at 7:25am. Students may not be dropped off before 7:25am. If arriving after school has started, please check in at the front office. If your child requires assistance to class after school has started, notify the front office for staff member assistance. For the safety of our campus, after school has started only staff and students are allowed in the hallways.
- Do not leave cars unattended in unmarked parking spots. This backs traffic up into the street, creates a hazard for drivers by obstructing the flow of traffic, and blocks buses from entering.
- Kindergarten families who walk their students to class and after class are to use the back parking lot only. We do not have enough space in the front parking lot.
- Please be courteous of other drivers and careful of students in our parking lots and in our community.
- Please pick students up promptly at dismissal time, 11:45am for kindergarten, and for all other grades 2:15pm M/Tue/W/F and 1pm on Thursdays.

Please be sure to call or email when your child is absent from school. If students are home sick, they must be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school.
If your child arrives to school after 7:45am, they must check in at the office for a late slip to class. After school has started, if your child needs to be walked to class, please notify a staff member in the front office. For the safety of our campus and all students, once school has started, only staff and students are allowed in the halls and at classrooms.
Breakfast is served daily from 7:25-7:45. If students arrive late, please get a pass from the office, and nutrition services is able to offer a late breakfast up until 8am. |

How Spring Got Its Name 🌸 🌱 🐣- 🌱 The spring season gets its name from the verb "spring." It's a nod to the flowers and plants springing up, springing open, and bursting into blossom.
- 🐣 The word itself comes from the Old English word "springan," which means "to leap, burst forth, fly up; spread, grow."
- 🌸 During the 14th century, the word came to describe the spring season, the time when plants wake from their winter sleep and bloom.
- 🌅 Before that, the word "Lent" was used to describe the season: "In the past it was the main word for ‘spring.' Lent surfaced as ‘lencten,' that is, ‘lengten': the season got its name because in spring days lengthen." (full article here)

Free digital behavioral health platforms for children and families available through the state The California Department of Health Care Services has launched two free behavioral health services applications for all families with children. The services provide free, safe and confidential mental health support for young people and families:
- BrightLife Kids is for parents or caregivers and children 0-12 years old.
- Soluna is for teens and young adults ages 13-25.
Each app offers coaching services in English and Spanish, as well as telephone-based coaching in all Medi-Cal threshold languages. |
